For the above, you will need Windows 7. This is no trick, but a service provided by Microsoft in its Windows PCs - "Ad-Hoc Connections".
Click read more below to get the steps to create a ad-hoc network.
- A laptop with Wired Ethernet (LAN) connection as the parent.
- Any wireless enabled device as the receiver (Laptop, Mobile, Gaming)
- Windows 7 in the parent laptop.
Part 1: Setting the Ad-Hoc Network
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. If you cannot find it, search it in the search-bar provided in the top-right side of the control panel window.
After opening Network and Sharing Center, Click on "Set up a new connection or network"
Once clicked, scroll down and you'll see "Set up a wireless ad-hoc network". Click on it, and click next. A new window will appear explaining about ad-hoc networking, click next again.
You will subsequently reach to a window as show in the screenshot on the left. Enter your Network name, keep the security type to WEP always. Enter your security key, which will restrict others to access the network.
Finally, before clicking next, click on "Save the Network". You are ready to click next now.
You are done setting up your Ad-hoc network. If you click on the Network icon to the side of the Taskbar's clock, you will see a window similar to th one in the right.
It wold show "Waiting for users" to the side of the Ad-hoc name. Whenever a user will connect to this network, it will change to "Connected".
You are not yet done with it.
Part 2: Sharing your internet with the ad-hoc network.
Now this is the tricky part. You first have to determine which network is giving you internet access. To do so, open Network and Sharing Center again and see what connection gives you "Internet" access. For example, in my case, my "XYZ Internet" connection gives Internet (See the screenshot).
This is important as you will need to share this network with your ad-hoc network. If you share the wrong network, your ad-hoc will not work.
Go to Network and Sharing Center again. Once opened, in the left pane, you will see "Change Adapter settings". Click on it.
Once in, right click on the network with internet access, click on Properties. Click on Sharing tab, tick the first box, select "Wireless Network Connection" in the drop down box.
Leave the second box unchecked.
Tick the third box, if it is not already. Then click on Settings just below. Tick all options in the following window. Click Ok in all subsequent windows. You internet is now shared.
